Get creative with every pattern you buy! There are so many variations you can design with any pattern, and the Ikina Jacket is no exception. This Ikina Jacket is made from Japanese Cotton, with a vintage kimono piece used as a belt. The alterations to create this look are simple: 1. The overall length of the garment is 1 1/2" longer. 2. Create a belt using contrasting fabric, with a finished length of 25" for each side. (this measurement can vary depending on size; alter to fit your body) 3. Each side facing is left off, creating a traditional side seam. Enclose the belt at your natural waist or desired location in the side seam.

The Ikina Jacket is a great pattern for piecing. The jacket was created using vintage Japanese fabrics. The front and back pieces are cut from the same fabric from Niu Imports, as well as the sleeves. The bands are cut from different vintage kimono pieces from Ah Kimono. The Ikina Jacket is shown with the Ikina Pant made from a slate blue rayon blend from The Wool House.

Ikina Jacket looks great here in medium weight reversible linen. Kathy is wearing a printed cotton Mimosa Top underneath, with the Plaza Pants to coordinate.

This jacket is an Ikina lengthened into a long kimono. The jacket and inner piping were created using rayon batiks from Dyenamic Batik. The copper outer piping is a Thai silk purchased from Laura Murray. The kimono is lined with silk charmeuse. The sashiko was completed using Nancy Shriber's technique with YLI rayon thread. Tiny gold beads were added to the center of the sashiko designs on the front lapel and side panels.

Ikina featured in Linda's blog: "One of the most fun things that we doing right now is taking a new look at some of our patterns and rethinking the details. Although I love the Ikina Jacket with its side facings and openings, not everyone feels the same way about it. So just last week, Kathy made a beautiful Ikina out of a Chanel-like pink and black polkadot wool and lined it in another polkadot silk fabric. But the major change happened by lengthening the jacket to right above the knee, eliminating the side facings and sewing up the side seams."
