Meet Zayn

Here it is, the one you've been waiting for...The Zayn Shirt. This split personality top is perfect for those who want to be classic and modern, all in the same garment. The short sleeve garment drapes from its flattering high, curved neckline and plunges into a gorgeous drape on the left side. And, this is a garment you don't have to take sides on  – it is suited for both wovens and knits!

How can it be designed for both knits and wovens? The key is in the neckline. The knit version is finished with a knit neckline binding, while the woven has a simple key-hole opening and hook and eye closure in the back. The top is constructed with building blocks. Use the simple shapes as design elements, by having fun with placement, like we did in the stripe version above. The drape of this top also lends itself to a variety of garment styles. Play with proportion as you pair the top with fitted capri pants, a 'la Laura Petrie, or Katharine Hepburn inspired flowing trousers.

If you prefer to work with wovens, why not step out of your box with this bold print? Imagine how chic the Abstract Splash Stretch Cotton above (which is available as a Zayn kit!) would look with a simple black pant, like the Helix Pants? We have also had fun pairing this pattern with border prints. The garment that Erin is wearing in the top image is a Denim With Floral Border. It is a great example of playing with print placement. ​You can show your wild side with a Zayn made in a soft Black and White Animal Print Sweater Knit. But watch out for catcalls! Rawr! If a solid is more your speed, I recommend the Cara Sweater Knits in Pumpkin Orange and Navy (otherwise known as the softest fabric ever). I know some of you are afraid of sewing with sweater knits, but don't be! We used the pumpkin for a Zayn and didn't do anything special. No sergers, no special needles, no special stitches. Just some polyester thread and a dream. Also, note that despite the name "sweater" knit, these fabrics aren't hot. They have a loose weave that is appropriate for year-round weather.
